Dan Campanelli

United States

Dan Campanelli’s watercolors convey a message of tranquility and a deep love for the heritage of man. Intent on historical accuracy, Campanelli began painting historic mills in fear that they are in imminent danger of extinction. He spends a great deal of time researching these mills, talking with relatives of millers, historians, restorers and a few living millers, before he even begins a painting. Campanelli cherishes the rhythm of the seasons and paints plein-aire, on location, throughout the year. Dan Campanelli’s watercolors provide a glimpse of the historical United States and give us insight into our own ancestry.

Campanelli’s love of history extends well beyond his paintings and into his everyday life. He and his wife, painter Pauline Campanelli, live in an authentically restored Georgian house in the Delaware River Valley. The couple restored the house themselves, often using 18th century tools. His affection for history is also evident in the Kentucky rifles he restores, the furniture he builds, the gardens and orchards he cultivates and the one hundred gallons of wine he produces each year from his own land. Campanelli’s works have won him over sixty-five awards including, National Gold Medals from the National Academy of Design and the National Arts Club. He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art” and “International Who’s Who in Art and Antiques.”
