St. Louis

Saunders Schultz’s career spans more than 50 years since graduating from Washington University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1950 and a fellowship to the University of Illinois, where he received a Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1952. He founded Scopia, a unique sculpture studio in 1960. His work has been featured in numerous national publications including ART news, Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, Architectural Forum and AIA Architect. It has also been noted in the U.S. News and World Report magazine, Washington Post, Washington Times and St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspapers among others.

Schultz’s sculpture varies in size from small to twenty-seven stories tall. Each is created to relate to the architectural and national surroundings in which it is placed. His public sculptures can be found in Washington D.C. and throughout the United States as well as in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Moscow.

In addition to his pioneering work in architecture/environmental sculpture, he has taught hundreds of classes and symposia at a variety of universities and institutions including: Harvard University, Columbia University, National Conference on Art in Public Places, Clemson Architectural Foundation, American Society of Landscape Architects, American Institute of Architects Research Foundation, American Institute of Interior Design, and many more where he delivered his 12 keynote addresses.

Currently Sanders is focusing on a proposal for a development to expand the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Gateway Arch Park located in St. Louis, across the Mississippi to East St. Louis, Illinois. He also is working on several socially conscious and visionary projects.
